The needs, frustrations, values, beliefs and strengths of your end-user may be viewed through an EDI lens focused on:

  • Personal/Identity Dimensions → aspects of our identity
  • Sociocultural Dimensions → social status & experiences (positionality)
  • Discrimination and oppression (not shown)
  • Power System Dimensions → (e.g., organizational)
  • Structural inequality → interaction of all the above

Dimensions of diversity don’t exist in isolation — consider intersectionality (see sub-node for more information).

This framework from Loden and Rosener shows all these layers of identity, as subsets of each other, starting from individual identity at the centre, and blooming out to capture sociocultural dimensions like attitudes and beliefs, social roles, and more systems level dimensions (in this case within the workplace) like seniority, job stability, etc.

When we think about intersectional identities, let’s cast the net wider to think beyond just personal markers of identity and look at these outer layers as well.
